Conference Theme:  Avoiding Burnout and Providing Support for Disability Services Offices During and After Covid

Day 1 (April 26): Session 1: 10 am-12 pm, lunch from 12-1 pm, and session 2 from 1:00-3:00 pm

  • 10:00-12:00 pm:  Adam Meyer: Using the Interactive Process Properly to Examine Accommodations during Covid
    • Presentation Description: In our work, we frequently talk about the “interactive process,” but what is it exactly? Who should be involved in the process? How does the interactive process intersect with assessing when a fundamental alteration exists? This session will explore the interactive process and its use in evaluating reasonable accommodations. The concept of the interactive process will be applied with remote attendance, long-haul COVID and extra time for assignment accommodations. Having a sound process can facilitate greater consistency in decision-making, which reduces the emotional wear-and-tear.

  • 10:00 am-12:00 pm: Margaret Camp: Burn Out: Treating the Wound and Putting Out the Fire
    • Presentation Description: Two years into a global pandemic, we are all burned out on the term ‘burnout’. It is a broad, vague term whose definition eludes us as we struggle to stay afloat in an ocean of accommodation requests, administrative demands, angry parents, students who lack resilience, and under-resourced offices against a backdrop of political unrest, social discord, and staff attrition as we witness ‘The Great Resignation’. How do we know if we have burnout, or something else? We will explore the characteristics and effects of burnout and demoralization, and forge new tools to try to restore balance and satisfaction to the important work we do.
